THE NOUNS
NOUNS are names of people, places, animals, things, idea or emotions. In short , they are naming words.
Common and Proper Nouns
- Common Nouns are the general names of people, places, or things of the same kind. They do not refer to particular people, places or things. They usually begin with a small letter. Ex- auditorium, boat, mason, machine, bucket, painting etc.
- Proper Nouns are the names of particular people, places or things. They always begin with a capital letter. Ex- Noor, Kaveri, John, Pune, Howrah Bridge, the Ganga.
Collective and Abstract Nouns
- Collective nouns are the same names of groups of people, animals or things.
a team of football players.
a herd of cattle
a fleet of ships
- Nouns that ideas, qualities and feelings are called abstract nouns.
Compassion, sorrow, integrity
- Abstract nouns are often formed from adjectives.
The courageous captain led the rescue operation.
The captain led the rescue operation with courage.
- Abstract nouns can also be formed from verbs.
The principal permitted the students to go to the art museum.
The principal gave the students permission to go to the art museum.

Possessive Forms of Nouns show belonging or ownership. We put an apostrophe (') after a noun to make its possessive form.
- To singular nouns, we add an apostrophe (') and s.
the elephant's trunk

- To plural nouns that end in s, we add an apostrophe (') only.
a girls' school
a book lovers' club
- To plural nouns that do not end in s, we add an apostrophe (') and s.
the women's club
a people's government
- When something belongs to more than one person and we mention the names of all of them, we add an apostrophe (') to the last noun.
