Nouns: Number and Gender, Singular and Plural Nouns
Sigular nouns refer to one person, idea or thing.
Ex- Mukut gifted a mobile phone to his father.
Plural nouns refer to more than one person, idea or thing.
Ex- Mukut bought two mobile phones for his parents.
There are several ways to form plurals of singular nouns..
1. We add -s to make some nouns plural.
desk ~ desks painting ~ paintings
2. If a noun ends in -s, -ss, -x, -sh, or -ch we add -es to form the plural.
lens ~ lenses process ~ processes fox ~ foxes
dish ~ dishes batch ~ batches
3. If a noun ends in -y and there is a consonant before the -y we drop the -y and add -ies.
company ~ companies monastery ~ monasteries
4. If a noun ends in -y and there is a vowel before the -y, add -s.
way ~ ways play ~ plays
5. From most nouns that end in -f or -fe, we drop the -f or -fe and add -ves.
life ~ lives calf ~ calves
6. However, for some nouns that end in -f of -fe, we form plurals by simply adding -s.
chef ~ chefs giraffe ~ giraffes
7. To most nouns that end in -o, we add -es.
domino ~ dominoes volcano ~ volcanoes
8. Again, there are some nouns ending in -o that form their plurals by adding -s.
radio ~ radios video ~ videos
9. Some nouns have the same form in the singular and the plural.
sheep ~ sheep deer ~ deer fish ~ fish
10. Some nouns change in an irregular manner.
child ~ children mouse ~ mice
11.There are some nouns that are always plural.
goods jeans clothes
12. Somtimes, the plural is formed by adding -s to the main word in a compound word.
daughter-in-law ~ daughters-in-law
brother-in-law ~ brothers-in-law
